S.T.E.A.M Student Conference 2012

The Upward Bound Math and Science program in collaboration and sponsorship from the Chicago Teachers’ Center, Northeastern Illinois University and Columbia College will like to invite you to the 2nd Annual STEAM Student Conference. The s.t.e.a.m. Student Conference is free!

s.t.e.a.m is a conference for middle and high school students who attend schools in the greater Chicagoland area to foster science, technology, engineering, architecture and mathematics learning through project-based and career-oriented workshop sessions.

The conference is design to engage students in academic inquiry through innovative didactic technologies. Teachers/Educators are encouraged to sign their students for participation to the conference. Teachers are also welcome to attend the event as part of a interactive introduction to enrichment STEM activities.

When: May 12th, 2012
Where: Northeastern Illinois University – Alumni Hall/Student Union
Who: Middle school and high school students from any school, educational outreach program or on for profit organization (6th through 12th grade)

Upward Bound Math and Science at NEIU | Program Update Fall 2011



The moment has come once again to deliver exciting programs to potential and returning participants.

  • Program Orientation: September 17th, 10am to 1pm
  • Where: Chicago Teachers Center, 770 N. Halsted St. 4th Floor room 414 Chicago, IL 60642

Registration is open to all students that attend the following schools: Clemente, Kelvyn Park, Mather, Michele Clark, Roosevelt, Senn, J.S. Freshman Center, J.S. Morton East and J.S. Morton West. Potential participants need to be citizens or residents of the U.S. and be low income and/or first generation college bound with and academic need.

This year, we are looking forward to delivering the following Saturday projects:
  • Game Design: Using Microsoft Gaming Environment
  • Mobile App Development : Using Windows Phone Environment and Android App Inventor
  • Robotics: Vex Competition and MIT’s Zero Competition
  • Junior Scientist : Columbia College Cell Research and Sustainable Energy

Also, we will be providing the following afterschool programs
  • Program Orientation: September 27th, 3pm to 5pm
  • Where: Determined by project/club (see below)
  • Architecture and Mobile App development at Saucedo Scholastic School
  • Robotics Vex Competition at Mather High School

Lastly, we will deliver our STEAM Student Conference 2012 on Friday, March 23th from 10:00 am to 2:30 pm. Students that participate in our project/initiatives will have a chance to present at the conference.

Announcing s.t.e.a.m student conference 2011 KEYNOTE!

Mr. Douglas L. Sisterson

Doug is the Operations Manager for the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Climate Research Facility (ACRF), a national user facility composed of three fixed sites, aircraft facilities, and two mobile facilities. The facility takesclimatological measurements around the world.

Doug has appeared on CNN, the Arts and Entertainment Channel’s “American Science in Review,” WGN radio’s Milt Rosenberg Show, and Chicago’s National Public Radio WBEZ’s “Odyssey,” as well as Barrow (Alaska) Public Radio KBRW and has been quoted in newspaper and magazine articles.
